Todmorden Yellow Ribbon Day
Todmorden will be decorated with Yellow Ribbons today (8th July); each and every Yellow Ribbon will hold a card from a child in Todmorden pledging to wear their seat belt ‘for those they love and those that love them.’
The aim of the day is to encourage the whole of Todmorden to think seriously about protecting themselves whilst travelling.
In 2008, Calderdale had the lowest child car passenger figures ever recorded – this was achieved simply because many more people have been belting up since the two year long ‘Seat Belt On?’ campaign in Calderdale.
Every year it is known that over 2000 more lives would be lost if seat belts are not worn.
Cllr Amanda Byrne, Portfolio Holder Regeneration and Development;
“It is pleasing to see the increase in the number of people using seat belts. It is hard to understand why some families still allow their children to not wear them. Parents wouldn’t deliberately put their children at risk in any other circumstance but still we see children travelling without.
“It is important that all learn the importance of wearing a seatbelt and pledge to do so for the ones they love.”
On the 30 June the Government fine for not wearing a seat belt was doubled from £30 to £60 for both the driver and passengers.
Schools taking part in the day’s events are:
Castle Hill J & I
Cornholme J, I & N
Ferney Lee Primary
Shade Primary
St Joseph’s RC
Todmorden CE (VA) J & I
Walsden J & I
