Todmorden's Renaissance Is On The Way
Calderdale Councillors are to discuss the future of Todmorden town centre at a Cabinet meeting taking place in the town on Monday 16th March. Councillors will be asked to give the Todmorden Town Centre Development Brief their backing, so that regeneration plans can be taken forward.
The Brief identifies key objectives to kick start the redevelopment of the town centre – creating a town square, new jobs and improved retailing.
Councillor Amanda Byrne, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Development, said;
“The draft development brief is intended to guide and shape future changes to the area, so that developers and architects can come up with their own imaginative solutions for the regeneration of the area.
“The site is at the heart of Todmorden, so any proposals would need to contribute to reflect this cultural heritage”
“I’m hopeful that the Brief will be given the support of Cabinet. We’re looking to create a high quality development, which enhances the character and appearance of the Town Centre conservation area.”
Consultation for the site has been taking place with public and stakeholders since 2007, the most recent being a series of consultation events across Todmorden at the beginning of this year. Public feedback and comments have played a major part in helping to shape the Development Brief
Councillor Ian Cooper, Portfolio holder for Community Services, is Chair of the Todmorden Town centre Renaissance Project Board stated;
“The draft development Brief has already been given the backing of the Todmorden Renaissance Board. There has been some really positive feedback from the consultations that have taken place.
“I can only imagine this being a positive move for Todmorden – it will enhance the area’s appearance, as well as promote economic activity in the town.”
