Tod High Aiming For Self Sufficiency
Calderdale Councillors will next week consider proposals which could help Todmorden High School become more self-sufficient. Staff and students want to develop a fish farm and associated growing plots on land behind the school.
However in order to access funding from the Big Lottery to fulfil their dream a number of formalities must take place first. This includes Calderdale Council dedicating the plot of land where the fish farm will sit to the Big Lottery as security for the funding.
Councillor Craig Whittaker, portfolio holder for Children and Young People’s Services, said he would be discussing the proposals relating to ownership of land with colleagues in the Cabinet when they meet on Monday, December 7.
“The school has been working with a range of people to develop a sustainable food hub at the site. The project includes the cultivation of fruit and vegetables and the rearing of fish.”
The whole process is called an Aquaponic system. Spring water will feed the tanks which will hold a variety of fish. The waste produced by the fish will then be used to feed the vegetables.
“In essence the process is a semi-commercial enterprise. The fish, fruit and vegetables will be used by the school canteen and by pupils in home economic lessons. Any surplus stock will be sold on to the community,” said Councillor Whittaker.
“In addition the school proposes to offer a BTEC Diploma in Environment and Land Based Studies to pupils aged between 14 and 19.
“This scheme meets a number of Council priorities – helping people to shape their own future and ensuring Calderdale is a clean, safe and thriving area for residents to enjoy.”
