Plans to make Todmorden Town Hall into the vibrant heart of the town centre have moved a step further. Following public consultation, the Todmorden Town Hall Development Group is now to commission a full design and feasibility study into the future of the Grade I listed building…

After hearing feedback at Area Forum meetings and from a public consultation, the group plans to build upon and extend the existing community and Council use of the hall. This could include improved performance space, new conference facilities and improved catering services.

The group was set up in 2008 by Calderdale Council, with the aim of looking into a range of options for the future development of the town hall. It includes ward and town councillors, local voluntary and community organisations and national agencies.

Last summer the Group commissioned a number of models for future use and these were used during the first phase of public consultation in October. Feedback from the public and existing users of the town hall has now been incorporated into a new design brief.

English Heritage is represented on the Group and will continue to monitor all the proposals. The group has also commissioned a conservation study which will be used along with the design brief to provide guidance to the architects.

Councillor Ian Cooper, chair of Todmorden Town Hall Development Group, said: “We have listened to people’s ideas and now want to provide full and more frequent access for all to this treasure of the town. The challenge will be exacting but this is rare and privileged opportunity to work with a building of such importance.”
