Local History On Show At Libraries

Libraries are celebrating local and community history month in May with displays of historic photos. The aim of the month is to increase awareness of local history, promote history in general to the local community and encourage all members of the community to participate.

At Brighouse Library, you can see local photos taken between 1900 and 1930 which show how much the town has changed. And don’t forget the Jackson Carvings and other local treasures at the Smith Art Gallery. You can also see the T.S. Firth Great War memorial, which commemorates the loss of 34 out of the 304 employees at Firth Carpets between 1914 and 1918.

Volunteers at Rastrick Library are displaying their work in progress, and asking visitors to add to the store of local knowledge being gathered in preparation for the library’s centenary celebrations in 2012. There will also be plenty of information about local groups and resources for both experienced and would-be local historians.

Central Library in Halifax and Hebden Bridge Library will be displaying items from their local history collections to draw attention to the strength and diversity of resources available for local studies in the area. Central Library will also have historical handbills on display, along with a competition to identify the locations of old photographs taken in areas where the townscape has seen significant change.
