Local Curry Wins Flavour At National Contest

A top place in a national market traders contest has gone to a business selling on Todmorden outdoor market. Jeff Thomson started a new career in the world of curry last year in his home town Burnley.

But earlier this year he re-located his business curried away to Todmorden and has never looked back.

He has been named highly commended finalist in the Make Your Mark in the Markets 2010 competition, putting in him the top three of business growth market traders in the UK.

curried away trades every Friday and Saturday at Todmorden where Jeff says the traditional community-style market is proving a real winner for his business.

A former journalist and public relations consultant, Jeff started his new venture last year in Burnley indoor market. But he re-located to Todmorden and has now earned recognition nationally through the Make Your Mark in the Markets competition run by Enterprise UK and supported by the National Market Traders Federation.

The competition’s aim is to recognise entrepreneurship. “Jeff won his place because he demonstrated that he has what it takes to turn a business idea into reality,” said John Walker, market manager with Calderdale council, who operate Todmorden market.

Jeff is now hoping to extend further in Calderdale by opening on Hebden Bridge’s monthly food market.

Curried away specialises in traditional Punjabi-style curries and snacks including samosas, all halal and made locally. Jeff Thomson can be contacted on 07711 123 371
