Lapland Coming To Town This December
The real Lapland will be brought to Halifax this December with a visit from Arctic traveller and writer Sara Wheeler. ‘Notes from the Arctic Circle’ is at Central Library on Thursday 3 December at 7.30pm.
There’s not a cuddly man in a red coat in sight, but there are real reindeers and snow as Sara uncovers the brutal reality of the Arctic in her new book, The Magnetic North.
Hear about her experiences smashing through the Arctic Ocean with the crew of a Russian icebreaker, herding reindeer across the tundra with Lapps and shadowing the Trans-Alaskan pipeline with truckers.
Sara Wheeler is a highly acclaimed writer. Her previous books include Travels in a Thin Country: A Journey Through Chile which was shortlisted for the Thomas Cook Travel Award; Terra Incognita – the story of seven months Sara spent on Antarctica as writer in residence, Cherry: A Life of Apsley Cherry-Gerrard (one of Scott’s men and author of The Worst Journey in the World); and most recently Too Close to the Sun: The Life and Times of Denys Finch Hatton.
Tickets for the event are £2 (£1.50 concessions), available from Central library in Halifax – tel 01422 392630.
