Calderdale Celebrates Refugee Week 2010
Calderdale is marking refugee week (12th to 20th June) with a programme of exciting events celebrating the diversity of cultures in the borough.
Organisations including Voluntary Action Calderdale, Calderdale Refugee Forum and St Augustine’s Centre in Halifax are holding events ranging from theatre and dance to film and fashion, crafts and five a side football, supported by Calderdale Council.
Throughout the week, the Making It exhibition (supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund) is running at Bankfield Museum, Halifax, celebrating the cultures of Halifax’ s different communities.
The St Augustine’s Centre have worked with Triangle C of E School to produce a poster for the week, with a poem by poet Benjamin Zephaniah entitled ‘Who Are We’.
Other events include:
- A stall at Halifax gala on Saturday 12 June
- Film showing of ‘Grow Your Own’, about a group of refugee allotment gardeners, at Central Library in Halifax, Monday 14 June at 5.15pm
- Grassroots theatre company from Zimbabwe performing at St Augustine’s Centre at 1.30pm on Tuesday 15 June
- ‘Refugee Week World Cup’- five a side football tournament at Park Lane High School, Tuesday 15 June, 5.30pm to 7.30pm
- RefuTEA party, afternoon tea at Hebden Bridge Trades Club on Wednesday 16 June at 2.30pm
- Film and fashion show with showing of a short film about the Making It project at St Augustine’s Centre at 5.30pm on Thursday 17 June
- Free craft sessions for all the family at Bankfield Museum on 19 and 20 June, drop in from 1pm to 4pm.
