BBC Countryfile Filming In Calderdale

BBC Countryfile presenter James Wong met Calderdale Council staff at Manor Heath Park and Ogden Water. The Countryfile programme looks at the people, places and stories making news in the British countryside and is soon to feature Calderdale as part of the Christmas Special.

The programme is scheduled to air on 20th December, BBC 1.

At Manor Heath they will be focusing on the award winning ‘Black Gold’ compost scheme. The Council’s parks and streetscene section have recently been giving bags of this compost away to local residents. The bags are provided by the Council’s Waste Management Team and can be reused by householders to take garden waste to the Household Waste Recycling Centres. The innovative recycling scheme produces compost by mixing green waste from parks with fallen leaves collected by street cleaning teams.

Councillor Ian Cooper, Cabinet Member Safer and Stronger Communities; “The composting project enables us to improve green recycling targets, comply with environmental legislation and improve public awareness of the benefits of compost, as well as reducing the amount of street waste being sent to landfill.”

BBC will also be filming at Ogden Water Country Park which has over 250,000 visitors every year.

They are particularly interested in how Ogden Water put your old Christmas tree to good use by creating a ‘Christmas tree’ fence around the waters edge.

Residents of Calderdale can take their trees to a number of collection points for recycling for use as compost and mulch in parks and gardens throughout Calderdale. Healthy, rooted trees taken to the Ogden Water drop off point are replanted.

If you would like to recycle your Christmas tree please just take it along to one of the collection points listed below and we’ll either re-plant it or turn it into nutritious compost and mulch for Calderdale parks and gardens.
